Tips & tricks
The presets are a reliable starting point — roughly four minutes for a soft, runny yolk, around six for a jammy medium, and about ten for a firm hard-boiled egg. Times assume a large egg gently lowered into already-boiling water.
Eggs straight from the fridge take a little longer than room-temperature eggs, and high altitude changes boiling — if your first egg is not quite right, adjust by 30 seconds and you will quickly find your number.
As soon as the alarm sounds, move the eggs into cold water. It stops the cooking, prevents that grey ring around the yolk, and makes them far easier to peel.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I boil an egg?
As a guide: about 4 minutes for a soft, runny yolk, 6 minutes for a jammy medium yolk, and 10 minutes for a firm hard-boiled egg — for a large egg lowered into boiling water. The presets set these for you.
Should I start timing from cold or boiling water?
The presets assume you lower the egg into water that is already boiling and start the timer then. That makes the timing consistent.
Why are my eggs not coming out right?
Fridge-cold eggs need a little longer than room-temperature ones, and altitude affects boiling. Adjust by about 30 seconds and you will quickly find your perfect time.
What should I do when the timer ends?
Move the eggs straight into cold water. It halts cooking, avoids a grey ring around the yolk, and makes peeling much easier.
Can I set a custom time?
Yes. The Soft, Medium and Hard presets are one tap, but you can also set your own time for exactly the egg you like.
Is the egg timer free?
Yes — free, no sign-up, works on any device.
