How to use the random timer

  1. 1

Set the shortest and longest durations you want — for example 1 to 10 minutes.

  2. 2

Press Start and the timer picks a random duration somewhere in that range.

  3. 3

It counts down from the surprise time, so you never quite know when it will end.

  4. 4

When it finishes, the alarm sounds; start again for a fresh random duration.

  5. 5

Tighten or widen the range any time to change how unpredictable it feels.

Tips & tricks

A random timer adds genuine unpredictability, which is exactly what you want for some activities — surprise rounds in games, varied work sprints, randomised drills, or mindfulness where a known end time would let you watch the clock.

The range is yours to control. A narrow range (say 4 to 6 minutes) keeps things roughly predictable; a wide range (1 to 15 minutes) makes every round a real surprise.

Because the duration is hidden until it ends, it is a good way to practise staying present — you cannot pace yourself against the clock, so you simply have to be in the activity.

Frequently asked questions

What is a random timer for?

It counts down a random duration within a range you set, so you do not know when it will end. That is useful for games, varied work sprints, randomised drills and mindfulness practice.

How do I set the range?

Enter a minimum and a maximum duration. Each time you start, the timer picks a random length between those two values.

Can I see the chosen duration?

The duration stays hidden while it runs — that is the point. You will see it only when the timer ends.

Is the result truly random?

Each run picks a fresh random value within your range, so consecutive timers are independent and unpredictable.

Does it keep accurate time?

Yes. Once a duration is picked it is timed against the system clock, so it stays accurate even in a background tab.

Is the random timer free?

Yes — free, no sign-up, runs in your browser.
