Tips & tricks

Tabata is a four-minute high-intensity format: 20 seconds all-out, 10 seconds rest, repeated eight times. The short rests are what make it tough — the timer's job is to keep you honest so you can focus entirely on the effort.

Because every transition has an audio cue, you never need to look at the screen mid-exercise. Put your phone down, listen for the signal, and switch between work and rest on the sound.

If classic Tabata is too short or too long for you, change the numbers in settings — the structure stays the same, and your settings are saved for next time.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Tabata timer?

It runs the Tabata interval format: 20 seconds of intense work followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated for 8 rounds — about four minutes total. This timer handles the switching and the audio cues for you.

Can I change the 20/10/8 settings?

Yes. The work time, rest time and number of rounds are all adjustable in settings if your routine differs from classic Tabata. Your changes are remembered.

Does it make a sound at each interval?

Yes. There is a clear cue at every work/rest switch and a short countdown for the final seconds, so you can train without watching the screen.

Will it keep going if my screen turns off?

The timer keeps accurate time in the background and the cues still fire. To keep the screen on during a workout, the timer requests a wake lock on supported devices.

Is there a warm-up countdown before it starts?

Yes. A short lead-in countdown gives you a moment to get into position before the first work interval begins.

Is the Tabata timer free?

Yes — free, no sign-up, and it runs entirely in your browser.
